SERVICES & TREATMENT

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is provided as a complementary therapy to relieve pain and help you return to good health. It can work alongside other treatment plans that we provide.

Only Physiotherapists trained in acupuncture, and comply with the regulations set by the HCPC and Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP), are registered to provide this service at Parkside Hospital.

What is Acupuncture?

Traditionally, Acupuncture involves needles painlessly inserted into the skin to influence the movement and levels of ‘Qi’ (your ‘energy’ or ‘life force’) within the body.

Many people who have had Acupuncture describe feeling a dull ache or tingling. The needles may be inserted only for a second or two, or may be left in place for 30 minutes or more. During an Acupuncture session, patients commonly experience heavy limbs or relaxation. The more specific benefits and effects of treatment are likely to be personal to you.

Which conditions can Acupuncture treat?

  • Neck, shoulder or cervical pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Hip pain
  • Headaches / Migraines
  • Arthritic pain
  • Jaw and face pain
  • Sports injuries (e.g. Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow)
  • Stress-related disorders
  • Nausea and vomiting following surgery or chemotherapy

People who use acupuncture often say that it helps them to feel relaxed and improves their overall feeling of wellbeing, if you have cancer click here for more information on acupuncture as well as our other services offered at Cancer Centre London which can help relieve sickness (nausea) caused by chemotherapy or other cancer drugs.

Does Acupuncture work?

Scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of Acupuncture in treating pain continues to grow. When combined with Physiotherapy, Acupuncture is widely accepted as a suitable treatment by the NHS and is recommended by NICE.

How often will I need treatment?

As patients generally respond individually to treatment, the number of Acupuncture sessions that are required may vary. Sometimes the effects are dramatic enough that only a few treatments are needed. In other cases, the effects could be more subtle and experienced only over a longer period of time. After an initial consultation, we will put together a tailored course of Acupuncture based on your symptoms.

You can refer yourself to us for Acupuncture without needing to consult your GP or another healthcare professional.
